Nature Journaling
-
In this hands-on science unit, students will discover the wonders of the natural world by becoming keen observers and thoughtful documentaries of their surroundings. Through the practice of nature journaling, students will engage with nature on a deeper level, recording their observations, reflections, and questions about plants, animals, weather, and ecosystems.
Throughout the unit, students will learn the basics of scientific observation, sketching, and writing techniques to capture what they see and experience. They will explore how to document changes over time, collect data, and use their journals to make connections between scientific concepts and real-life observations. By the end of the unit, students will have created a personalized journal filled with their unique insights and discoveries, helping them to develop a greater understanding of the natural world and their place within it.
Key Concepts:
Observing and recording nature using multiple senses
Developing skills in sketching, note-taking, and data collection
Identifying patterns and changes in natural environments
Connecting scientific principles to real-world examples
Skills Developed:

In the Field with STEM
-
In the Field with STEM is an exciting, hands-on learning program designed to connect middle school and high school students with real-world STEM professionals and industries. Once a month, students will embark on field trips to visit leading STEM experts, ranging from engineers and scientists to data analysts and healthcare innovators. Through these immersive experiences, students will have the opportunity to explore various STEM careers, observe professionals at work, and gain insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of those shaping the future of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
To prepare for each field trip, there will be a mandatory Zoom call held the week of the field trip. During this session, students will receive background information about the STEM professionals and industries they will be visiting. The Zoom call will also provide an opportunity for students to ask questions and engage with their peers in preparation for the in-person experience later that week.
Throughout the program, students will engage in interactive learning, ask questions, participate in live demonstrations, and discover the practical applications of STEM in diverse fields. From high-tech laboratories to cutting-edge manufacturing plants, each field trip provides a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world STEM experiences.
By the end of the program, students will not only have a deeper understanding of STEM concepts but will also be inspired to pursue STEM careers, armed with new knowledge and connections in the industry.
-
$500 per semester
Covers all students' admissions and zoom training. Parents in most cases will be free or covered. However, some organizations add a higher price on for more adults so final cost per adult if attending will be provided asap for each trip with cost of extra students (ex. siblings.)
